Resorption

Root resorption is a dental condition characterized by the breakdown and loss of tooth root structure. It can occur for various reasons, including trauma, orthodontic treatment, inflammation, or other underlying dental conditions.

Root resorption can affect permanent teeth and may present as mild, moderate, or severe depending on the extent of tissue loss. While some cases of root resorption may be asymptomatic and go unnoticed, others can cause pain, sensitivity, or changes in tooth appearance.

Root resorption is relatively uncommon compared to other dental issues, affecting an estimated 5% to 10% of the population and should be treated as soon as it is detected to prevent irreversible damage. If root resorption is suspected, the tooth should be evaluated promptly with three-dimensional imaging using CBCT. This advanced imaging technology is the only way to accurately determine the extent of the damage. Once resorption is identified, timely treatment is critical, as continued resorption can lead to damage so severe that the tooth may no longer be salvageable.
